“In an open system, we compete with our imagination”

I like this statement by Nicholas Negroponte in “Being Digital” (1995). Very relevant in the era of Open Banking! I have just re-read his book during this festive break.

I recall reading it for the first time when studying Information Technology in London in 1996. I was trying to understand and appreciate the impacts of the (then) new ICT technologies on Financial Services.

More than 20 years later and a good number of digital projects behind me, I find it still very valid. Some topics and arguments are of course slightly outdated or too positivists 20 years afterwards, but it is somewhat easy for the reader not to fall into anachronism anyhow when reading it today.

I would recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the last 30 years of history of technology. We foresee the touch screen, Google’s home assistant, Flipoboard or Netflix among others, looming.
